Hey SistahGurls,
A few months ago, I encouraged you all to participate in our survey to gauge the information you are looking for in this newsletter and our advocacy efforts. If you participated in the survey, thank you for your time. I wanted to share the survey statistics and provide additional context.
Quick Pause: If you haven’t read our latest newsletter, read below
Topics You're Interested In
Thank goodness I asked this question because I always want to provide helpful information. Providing what you need versus what I think you need helps me out a lot when it comes to content and who to invite.
Topics you want more of:
Preventative Care
Mental Health and Therapy Options
Holistic or Integrative Medicine
How to advocate for yourself at the doctor's office
What are the top 2 concerns you have when it comes to your health and wellness? Â
The section seemed mixed, and I think that depends on your current health status, age, overall wellness, and fitness goals. I plan to find ways to combine all of these topics in a way that benefits everyone. Most of your concerns were insurance, treatment, mental health, menopause/hormonal treatment, and medicine, reproductive health ( Dr. Yamicia Conner, who is also on Substack, has two newsletters).
What kind of format do you prefer for health information? Â
Online Webinars are the theme most of you want, which is convenient for us all. One of the perks of becoming a paid member of SistahCare Alliance is access to webinars and the opportunity to connect with other healthcare professionals. A moment of transparency is that I'm currently unemployed, and I'm currently running this newsletter by myself with the hopes of hiring an intern soon (fingers crossed). Curating these spaces requires a lot of behind-the-scenes work. I'm currently offering this for free, and if you believe in our mission, I would strongly suggest considering an upgrade to a paid subscription. You can get a 25% discount today.
Would you attend a free health event if it were hosted in your city or neighborhood?
The responses were split 50/50 again. I think it just depends on what your overall goals are in your wellness journey.
What would make a community health event feel safe, empowering, and worthwhile?
These responses are the reason why I started SistahCare Alliance; we all want to be heard, not talked over, and have a healthcare provider we can trust. Many of you want to speak with black professionals outside of the doctor's office; listing and recommending medical professionals is just as important as eating at a restaurant.
How would you describe your comfort level navigating the healthcare system?Â
62.5% of you don’t feel comfortable in the healthcare system, and I agree that other industries have progressed at a rapid pace; in most cases, the healthcare system alone can’t catch up. As someone who has experience in the revenue cycle, the billing process begins when you check in for your appointment.
Recently, there has been discussion about why appointments take so long and why patients are required to arrive 10-15 minutes early, but then wait 30 minutes, in some cases an hour, to be seen for an appointment they arrived on time for. Paper records have been replaced by EHRs (electronic health records), and yet, they still pose a glitch in the healthcare matrix.
I want to thank each of you for participating in this survey. It will help me build a stronger community and enable me to curate spaces that provide you with the information you need.
If you have any topics you would like the SistahCare Alliance to address, please list them below.
If you are a woman experiencing perimenopause, I would love to hear from you.
